Use What You Have Series: 4. Open Shelving
The last installment of the 'Use What You Have' series is dedicated to open shelving. As you may have noticed, these seemingly floating shelves are all the rage right now. In your kitchen, laundry, living, kids rooms, and the list goes on…It started for me in the kitchen. Our HGTV designer put these great shelves in above this beautiful furniture piece. (By the way, I love incorporating pieces of furniture to accent more traditional kitchen cabinetry, not to mention bringing character to the space).
Styling shelves can be a little intimidating. How do you fill the space? I suggest starting with a few larger items with some height on the ends of your shelves. On our kitchen shelves I started with this secondhand white ceramic pitcher and a dollar store silver charger on a stand. On the right side I used a white plate and my mom’s hand-me-down salt and pepper grinders from the 1970s. (Love them!) I must point out the beauty in the middle. This sign is from my Instagram friend @houseofboysandbeauty. You must follow her and contact her to make yours.
As you can see from my other choices, I’m in love with transferware and copper! These are perfect pieces for Fall. I picked up the knockoff transferware turkey, pheasant and duck plates from Tuesday Morning. The copper moscow mule mugs are from Walmart and the gorgeous wine glasses were a gift from World Market. The rest of the copper was inherited or secondhand. If you have copper, bring it out of hiding! It is a treasure!
Next is a super cute little sifter turned shelf. This vintage beauty makes a great addition to my guest bathroom and is super fun to change up with the seasons. Displayed here is another farmhouse sign from @houseofboysandbeauty as well as a beautiful print of an original painting from Heather Sims Art. I got it awhile back from her Amazon store.
Lastly these shelves are in my laundry room. I was blessed with a large countertop which has become our coffee station. Above my Keurig is a perfect spot to store these adorable Rae Dunn mugs and yet again more cute signs from @houseofboysandbeauty. Because first we drink the coffee, then we do the things! Have fun styling your shelves and let me know how it goes!
